In the Countrysde by Henry Lerolle.

It matters little to me. After all, I’m going to see a dazzling still life by M. Vollon. This painter, who has allowed us to see some of his melancholy rainy landscapes, has returned this year to the genre that initially made him famous. In a black frame an enormous pumpkin spreads out, tumescent, next to a black iron cauldron and a yellow brass bowl. There it is, like a ball of fire, bursting from the wall, leaping out from the pale inadequacies that surround it; it’s knocked out with great brushstrokes, beaten out like a Franz Hals; there’s a thousand times more talent in this simple pumpkin than in M. Dagnan’s Saint Herbland, than in all the ceilings painted by the yard by the son of M. Robert-Fleury.13

Vegetables, fruit and flowers now spread out in all the alcoves, corridors, rooms and stairways. They spring up, pell-mell, contemptuous of the season, signed, for the most part, in letters of red oxide, by Monsieur So-and-So – or rather by Madame So-and-So, because it’s mostly women who devote themselves to this form of cultivation.
